They Leave a Presence

(for Catherine)

.

They comfort us more than they know

Whatever span with us they bide;

They leave a presence when they go.

.

Warm, solid creatures rumbling low,

Contented crescents by our side,

They comfort us more than they know.

.

On human thresholds poised, a toe

Hovering between tame and wild,

They leave a presence when they go.

.

Witnesses to our daily woe,

Companions as we’ve fussed and sighed,

They comfort us more than they know.

.

Shadows in undergrowth they flow,

Stalking in solitary pride,

They leave a presence when they go.

.

Waxing and waning like the tide

Their little lives, away they blow –

They comfort us more than they know.

They leave a presence when they go.

.

.
